BRISTOL BLUE GLASS HISTORY
The attractiveness and desire for Bristol Blue Glass is thought to have originated by accidental discovery of glass colouring. The Blue and White Delftware was very popular in the 1700s and very expensive so Bristol potters emulated pieces and in doing so created the traditional Blue Glass. This became very sought after and found its place in the wealthiest of houses as an alternative to Delft pottery.
Hand made Blue Glass declined with mechanisation and mass production in the 1920s but was appreciated again in the mid 20th century.
Blue Glass and its deep hue is now world renowned and sought after with only a few highly experienced glass manufacturers producing hand made and individually produced items.
Bristol Blue Glass originated in Bristol with the exclusive importation of Cobalt from Germany. Glass is imported today from Germany in the form of nodules where the Silica Sand is incorporated with lead oxide and other minerals. This is then melted in the ‘Pot’ and the correct proportion of Cobalt added by the experienced Glassmakers. The molten glass is then extracted from the ‘Pot’ and poured into the mould and pressed. It is then put into an annealing oven to cool very slowly overnight otherwise it would shatter. It is then cleaned and polished before being hand sand blasted with the wording.
Each casting is hand made and with each one having their own characteristics, one of which is where a particle of dust mixes into the glass and becomes a ‘seed’ in Glass making terms – making it a unique and individual item .
